Moon Gate Plaza - Sun Gate
Project type
Public Art
Date
2021
Location
Salinas Chinatown , California
One of the most rewarding experiences about the Moon Gate Plaza project was working together with ACE members, local artists, the community, and collaborators from different sectors. This was to create a design that is representative of the community, colorful, celebratory, and physically possible. From miniature models and a scrapbook of inspiration came many digital renderings and revisions of the designs. Intergenerational and intercultural storytelling and discussions gave me a better understanding of the significance of the Asian experience. While a tour of the Republic Café and a magical rooftop view further sparked my desire and curiosity to get out and explore the neighborhood. I wanted to experience the cultural diversity that reflects the grit, resilience, imagination, and heart of Chinatown.
Connecting our community with art using historic architecture as a backdrop; public art acts as a catalyst for change. These gates function as a wayfinding device in the neighborhood, giving the community a sense of belonging and civic pride. The installation speaks to themes pivotal to time, voids, inclusion and diversity, sustainability, and our environmental future, as well as our interconnectedness.
